Making It: all about Joanna Gick
Making It, a new NBC Crafting Competition Series
Eight Makers will vie for the title of “Master Maker” and a $100,000 grand prize on NBC’s “Making It,” premiering Tuesday, July 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
The six-episode crafting series, hosted and executive produced by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, will feature judges Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s trend expert, and Simon Doonan, Creative Ambassador for Barneys New York. We’ll be watching to see who crafts (and SEWS) their way to the finish line.
This week, we’re chatting with Joanna Gick from Chandler Arizona. A 37-year-old mother of two, wife and sought-after interior designer, Joanna’s projects have been featured in HGTV magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, People, The Wall Street Journal, Fit Pregnancy and more. Her love of interior design was fueled by her early love of crafting. She especially loves to create custom kids’ rooms.

SN: What is your craft of choice?
Wow, this is really a tough one for me. I think the fun thing about me is that I don’t have a signature craft. I really love to try everything from stained glass to making costumes for my kids. I love to watercolor paint but I also like to sculpt. I really can not pick one!
SN: How do you think your craft specialty prepares you to win the competition?
I think the fact that I can work in all different mediums really helps me in the competition.
SN: How has your craft helped in other areas of your life?
Crafting has always been an escape for me. My happy place if you will. If things got hard for me I could always get lost in something I was making and have a feeling of accomplishment when it was completed.
SN: What would you say to encourage someone who wants to learn your craft?
Never give up, It took a ton of practice to learn all of the things I have learned along the way while crafting. It really is trial and error. Some things you make you will love and others you won’t, but never stop trying.
SN: Did you get to try a craft you wouldn’t normally have done for the competition? If so, what did you learn during the process?
Yes, and honestly it was one of the best parts of the process for me. I am an interior designer by trade and I co-own my own company. I spend the majority of the time working on designing homes and crafting comes in my free time. It was so fun to have the opportunity to go on a “crafting vacation” where I got to craft all day and try new things I haven’t tried before.
Watch Joanna get her glue gun on starting July 31 at 10/9c on NBC.
